The simulated physics provide an air of uncertainty to everything you build: As unused goo balls crawl aimlessly around your structures, their weight causes everything to sway back and forth. You're soon introduced to several new species of Goo with varying abilities. Before you know it, however, World of Goo starts throwing curveballs at you on every single level. The first few levels are simple enough, as you get a feel for how high you can build a tower without it toppling over or how far across you can build a bridge before it buckles under its own weight. Being made of goo, as you might expect, these structures aren't particularly stable, and the physics simulation that defines how these structures bend and break provides the foundation, so to speak, for the game's puzzles. The objective is usually the same: to build a path to the level's exit pipe, whether it's way up in the air or tucked away behind any number of deadly obstacles. World of Goo's premise is very simple: In each level you're presented with a small army of goo balls, who can be connected together to form makeshift bridges and towers. Whichever comparison you prefer, World of Goo is an amazing, breathtaking and immeasurably charming piece of game design, a not-to-be-missed debut for a small indie team that only six months ago was showing a smaller version of the game at the Independent Games Festival. But it's just as easily described as a Lemmings for the 21st century, as you try to lead critters with varying abilities to the nearest exit before they run into any number of untimely deaths.
